A run from the heart: Laguna Beach woman runs from Huntington Beach to Arizona border, raising money to fight childhood cancers
Moments after the full moon set into the ocean and the sun rose over the mountains of eastern Orange County, Becky Mudd of Laguna Beach said goodbye to friends gathered in a Huntington Beach parking lot at the start of the Santa Ana River Trail Saturday and began her 262-mile run to the border of Arizona to raise money and awareness for childhood cancers.
Mudd lost her adult sister to brain cancer three years ago and has become active is raising awareness, particularly after learning about the lack of funding for pediatric cancer research.
On Tuesday, as Mudd neared the halfway point, the police chief of Banning rode alongside her for a few miles. After a brief stop at Banning City Hall to meet with families who had lost children to cancer, Mayor Debbie Franklin joined Mudd and ran a few blocks.
Later in the day, as winds blew upward of 50 mph through the San Gorgonio Pass, Mudd made it to State Route 62, her route to the border and to Sunday’s planned finish.
